How we repair rust so it does not come back
First we find how far it has gone, whether that is surface rust, deeper scale, or all the way through the metal. We also check the back of the panel, since rust usually starts from the inside where moisture sits. Anything beyond light surface rust is cut out completely, because rust left behind keeps spreading under the repair.
We then weld in sound metal, treat and seal both sides of the panel, and refinish it to match. Filler is only ever a smoothing step over solid welded metal. It is not a rust repair on its own, and painting over rust only hides it while it keeps eating the panel.

Is rust repair covered by insurance?
Usually not. Rust from age, weather, and road salt is treated as wear and maintenance, so standard policies generally do not cover it. The exception is rust that traces back to a covered event, such as corrosion from unrepaired collision damage. Most rust repair is paid out of pocket, and we give you a free estimate after we see how far it has spread.

Common questions
Can't you just sand it down and paint over it?
No. Painting over rust only hides it. The metal keeps corroding underneath and comes back through the new paint. The rusted metal has to be removed and replaced with sound metal for the repair to last.
Why not just fill the rust with body filler?
Filler over rust traps moisture against the metal and speeds up the rot. We cut out the corroded metal and weld in new steel; filler is only used to smooth the finished surface.
Will the rust come back after the repair?
Not in the repaired area, as long as every bit of corrosion was removed and both sides of the panel were sealed. New rust can still start elsewhere on the car, which is why catching it early matters. Our winter road salt makes it spread fast.
